DarkAero Inc. Aircraft Critical Review Part 2
This second part of 4 or 5 part review of the DarkAero Aircraft Project by 3 brothers. Part 1 addresses DarkAero and censorship of input and does not allow critical or contrary opinions on their channel. This Part 2 compares the DarkAero to existing aircraft that are flying. I did not include the Questair Venture, which I should have. It shares some similar designs and has performance that is hard to match by any single engine, retractable gear kit plane or standard category manufactured aircraft. You will find the tables interesting. The main criticism I have is DarkAero has estimated performance that I feel is not possible with their current engine choice.
I will NOT shadow ban (as DarkAero does) a comment that disagrees with the technical aspects or opinions that respectfully disagree. However if you make it personal I will delete and block you, nothing sneaky. I understand some people love this plane and emotional about it. Don't bring that, bring logic, facts, math, science, physics and examples. Thanks..
In aerospace, aircraft design. being closed off and making unilateral decisions without input from more experienced people can lead to poor choices. On the other hand aircraft built totally by committee can also be poor designs. There is a balance. In the case of great aircraft all had visionary individuals, teams and companies behind those great aircraft: Kelly Johnson, Jack Northrop, Burt Rutan for example. The three brothers are smart and it seems the older Brother is the leader and making many design decisions. They have a mission in mind and designing to that mission. Is a tiny two seat cross country plane needed? There are many out there. They know that. Will their design be better? We don't know yet. However we can speculate and that is what I am going to do in this series.
Some DarkAero design choices may fall under overly complicated and why do that category. I will cover these in a later video, On the other hand this is a prototype subject to change. Although they are trying to build production molds to sell kits later. This may be a brilliant idea or turn out to be not so good if major design changes are needed. I think there is a chance for the latter scenario.
These three Brothers have engineering degrees, as I do. The Brothers worked outside Aircraft Industry but had fascination with aviation and built a kit plane called a Cozy. This lead them to designing their own composite plane (DarkAero) and using better composite process and materials, than the wet layup fiberglass of the Cozy, which was a process popularized by Burt Rutan, a genius aeronautical engineer. Advantage of the "Rutan Method" is no molds are needed. Foam is hot wired formed with templates. However it takes a lot of work to complete the surface finish after layup. It also used fiberglass. DarkAero is using carbon. The DarkAero manufacturing process and materials are not new or revolutionary and geared to their home grown budget and resources. Never the less cleaver and thoughtful.
However they have made some interesting design choices, a few I like and few I disagree; with one significant choice I feel is unfortunate. One critical choice will keep this plane from reaching it's potential, and hoped for estimated performance which I predict it will not meet. I will cover this in a later Part.
Later parts of this series will to point some aspects of the design choices. Darkaero does not allow any critical comment on their channel, therefore this series of videos is to address that. Intent is not to bash or disparage but is critical at points. The basic design is interesting but not revolutionary. It is cool but is it practical? The predicted performance with the engine choice is optimistic. The aircraft at this time April 2024 has not flown yet. I am eager to see it fly and wish DarkAero all the best.

I decided to upgrade my OEM Sach shocks and struts. There was no obvious handing issue at 89,000 miles. The Bilstein's are stiffer valuing for an A3 Audi, so I expected more damp compression, but the lack of rebound appears to show weak strut. See my other video comparing the shocks. The handling is amazing. The old part number was 1T0 413 031 GG SACH, The new PN is 22-131614 Bilstein.

    I agree with you on many points. Not to knock the DA and crew, they are clearly standout people and adept with modern CAD and CNC prototyping. I've also been critical and had comments vanish. I try to be positive and compliment Sandwich, have thus gotten away with some criticism. Every which way I ran the numbers, you could only expect to see 275mph if you counted 100% pressure recovery ram air, at sea level. OR ran numbers based on the Turbocharged UL520T (220hp up to 15kft) then, it's a 300+mph airplane flat-out. But a 180hp engine at 75% power is not easily going 275mph. This would be a Reno IF1 racer level of drag (same wing area) but side x side with a bulbous canopy? No way. The UL series is a favorite for EAAers in Australia and NZ. Those folks love them and have worked out most of the issues over the last decade. The EFI, modern piston and cylinder head design are improvements to the Lycomings. Their power to weight ratio is significantly better, partly due to lighter weight and also due to attaining their respectable 200 Horsepower at a very high 3,300rpm. Although 185hp at 3,000 is the official "rated" or normal range. Their decision to include a split-rudder/airbrake leaves a few ?? as that airplane is designed around the air master constant speed prop, which is an effective air brake when switched into max rpm and throttled back. Their airfoil choice does not appear to be a later NLF design, it looks like it might actually be a 66-series. Or possibly pulled from the Lancair IV. A better airfoil would have been John Roncz/John Sharps Nemesis. Which is a de-cambered NLF-0414F, having its low drag range brought down for lower wing loading or higher speed, reduced moment, and retains the bulged leading edge for improved lift and better stall. (I have these ordinates on file). Their sharp, straight-tapered leading edge wing looks iffy in this regard. Although the conservative taper ratio which appears to be 0.8 or 0.75 will behave fine, even without much washout, and a poor airfoil choice. Overall, I like what they are doing, but I don't think it will "cruise" at 275 with that specific engine (non-turbo). Unless they are planning on winding it up to 3,300rpm/200hp plus around +10% due to ram air pressure ratio rise. Take 220hp up to 0.75 Density altitude and you *might* crack 275, maybe. But probably not at full fuel weight, and definitely not going to cruise long distance at a speed well above "normal rated" rpm. Can't wait for the rest of your critiques. You certainly have the background to form a well informed opinion.

    I feel at ease. I feel better automatically and I think I can bring joy to many people! Hmm.......If something difficult happens, something good will definitely happen. Even if what you are doing right now is difficult, you can definitely do it. A very difficult trial is the best teacher. If you don't have challenges in life, you can't fail, but you can't achieve success either. Don't be afraid of failure, believe in yourself and try to the end. A friend called success will be eagerly waiting for you not far away. I hope from the bottom of my heart that your persistent efforts will ultimately bear fruit. I enjoyed watching the video you made so preciously.

    The Darkaero project uses a brilliant and proven engine and applies the fundamental success recipe of building the aircraft around the engine and prop. The fact that you don’t like this reflects a lack of scientific thinking in my opinion. The custom designed prop will make this engine shine, by delivering maximum efficiency precisely at the rpm/airspeed/power point they computed. it only takes watching their videos for 5 minutes to understand that they are truly competent and very skilled engineers with an incredible ability to execute. I am convinced that the Darkaero poroject will succeed. It is remarkable that they hit their empty weight target, another proof of solid engineering background and perfect execution. PS If I were running their comments section I would also delete posts which contribute nothing but FUD, just like your videos which I find hollow snd a waste of time.

    Carbon fiber is the key difference for performance based on European ultralight success. The dark arrow is likely to be extremely light. I don’t know how they can get to the 51% rule if the plane’s entire structure is carbon molded fiber.

    I am gonna comment on Browning's and your advice on what and what not to do when cleaning a Browning Buckmark pistol. I will tell you exactly why Browning does not want you to strip it down for a proper and full cleaning. Which is stupid on its face. First, it is very easy to strip the pistol down for a PROPER CLEANING.........it is not rocket science. The problem is the stupid/poor design of the recoil guide rod and its very, very fragile itsy, bitsy, tiny C-clip that retains the recoil spring onto the guide rod. That thing can go a flyin in the wind if it is bumped or nudged, and if it does........GOOD LUCK FINDING THE LIL SOB !! That is the soul reason Browning does not want you to clean the gun as you should. My opinion of the Buckmark is, and I have owned two and currently still own one, it is a so so .22 pistol. Mine were/are fairly accurate but it is a cheap to manufacture and really only so so in its intrinsic beauty. A Colt Woodsman or S&W Model 41 it is not. Truly several .22 pistols that are superior in all category's are the S&W .22 Victory and any of the Ruger Mark pistols. One note.....it is possible to get and replace the lousy factory guide rod with a much better design, which I have done, but I can't recall the name of the company that makes it. And to recommend that you ' do not ' fully clean a .22 pistol, and expect it to keep on functioning is folly.........a joke, on you !!

      @gmcjetpilot Місяць тому

      Great question. That would be a great item to list, agree. Time limits on making videos aside, I am focused on performance mostly, range and seats. Weight and stall speed would be two other great metrics to compare. You can look these up of course. My premise is the estimated performance is optimistic with the UL Power engine. So I provide some data to show the Darkaero numbers are optimistic. It is out performing some of the fastest and most efficient kit planes of the last 20 yrs and they have nothing new. Cool yes, and hats off, as I said I hope I am wrong.

    I think this video from DarkAero (uploaded three years ago) addresses your concerns about the "320 cubic inch engine that only makes a real 170 hp at the proper prop RPM" (3:08). Title: Why this propeller is different: Airmaster Propeller on the DarkAero 1, link: ua-cam.com/video/riOTy9m0WTY/v-deo.html. I would suggest you watch the first three minutes. It explains how the propeller has been specifically designed to run at the higher rpm of the UL power engine.

    • @gmcjetpilot
      @gmcjetpilot Місяць тому

      I am going to do the UL Power video soon. If you go to Facebook group you will see some issues. Reliability and performance have been to systemic issues from the get go. I have an RV-7 with 180 HP Lyc O-360. There is one RV-7 with the UL Power engine, same as darkareo. It is about 10-15 mph slower and fuel burn is not much better. If I slow to the same speed my fuel burn is about 0.5 gal per hour more. So MODERN aside the engine will be the issue holding it back. Darkaero claims 275 mph cruise! That is going to be hard no, with the engine they have. I hope I am wrong. I am life time EAA member, built two planes, engineer professional pilot. I have followed kit plans an alternative engines for 30 yrs.. I have seen many planes come and go. I hope they become a success but they will need a derivative design, and frankly build it around a Lycoming. It looks like they are growing the business to be more education, fabrication, consulting? WHAT I TELL PEOPLE never buy a new kit plane design until there are many flying, you talk to three owners that are flying and best if you fly the plane before investing almost 1/4 million.

    Most guns that come from the factory are coated with a preservative substance and should be removed and replaced with a good gun oil or CLP. Some guns specifically say in their manuals that a through cleaning is needed for proper functionality. Having said that, if you are not comfortable with tearing your firearm down to get to it's internals, have someone who is do it. Then after it's done properly, you can do any cleaning in the future as done in this video that doesn't require disassembly.

    • @DonYeyoReaks
      @DonYeyoReaks 10 місяців тому

      I agree. Mine was jamming when I first shot it at the range until I took it home, cleaned the barrel only, I then lubed the barrel and some internals (without disassembling the gun) and now my Browning Buckmark works great. This was my first gun and I must’ve initially not read the manual correctly because I didn’t clean it off the box (in the manual it says to do so, I realized after). Fast forward though, how I mentioned, I haven’t had any failures after cleaning and lubing it.

    JR ran out of fuel and that's why the car didn't turn. He wouldn't have won it.

    This was the first year I was able to watch both the Indy 500 and Coke 600 in my life, and in both, the guy I would have liked to see win have problems on the last lap coming out if turn 4. JR Hildebrand hits the wall and Dale Jr runs out of gas

    I was sitting in Turn 4 and watched it happen in front of me. A little wiggle and then sparks coming off the wall. This just goes to prove it ain't over till it's over.
